Tūramarama ki te Ora – Wellness wānanga

Rotorua : Waiariki

Holistic wellbeing and healing for whānau is the focus for an initiative in Rotorua called Tūramarama ki te Ora wellness wānanga.  This initiative, based in Rotorua, increases the support and capability of whānau, hapū and iwi to prevent suicide within their communities and responding effectively if and, when a suicide occurs.
In collaboration with community and whānau groups, wānanga draw from the knowledge of skilled kōeke and rongoā practitioners in the community.  These people are also engaged in wider conversations to support whānau in gaining access to adequate support, especially when they are in distress.  Through Tūramarama ki te Ora, whānau are able to attend wānanga to learn and begin a healing journey through any trauma they may have experienced.  While attending wānanga, they are provided with knowledge and support to utilise information on accessing local healing practices and rongoā.
Ultimately, the Tūramarama ki te Ora initiative aim is to strengthen whānau knowledge and confidence to access services, so that whānau have an increased ability to deal with challenges that may arise throughout their lives.
