Aorangi Hui Taiohi
Fielding : Manawatū
Through whakawhanaungatanga, a strong and motivated whānau team in Counties Manukau have been working to strengthen the connections of rangatahi to whānau, hapū and iwi. With a focus on rangatahi who connect to Aorangi Marae, the strategy has been to build confidence within themselves, through culture, Te Reo Māori, Kapahaka and other activities on the marae.
Implemented to develop connections to whānau, hapū and iwi, these marae-based wānanga utilise a Tuakana- Teina model. Pakeke from Aorangi marae, aged between 30 – 45, are also encouraged to participate in activities to act as role models and activity leaders which has come with much success.
The results of these wānanga have been very positive and it has been easy to see the strengths of this approach for rangatahi in developing resilience. Therefore, there are plans to continue these wānanga over the coming years, so that whānau are able to build upon previous knowledge and further explore hapu connections, ways of operating (tikanga etc) and historical narratives, with the vision to foster wellness in future generations across the hapū.
*This whānau initiative is proudly supported by Te Au (and Te Rau Ora) through the Māori Suicide Prevention Fund (2020-2021).
